Looking after your Western, English or Australian leather saddle is not difficult and you will be more than repayed for the time it takes by having a supple, good looking saddle that will last for many years. We’ve put together some instructions to help you take the very best care of your saddle and keep it in good condition.
The most important tip is to moisture away from the saddle to prevent the growth of mildew and mold which will give the leather a greenish color. A good quality saddle cover is essential and make sure when you buy one that it is of the breathable sort. A plastic cover is not a good idea as it will trap moisture inside and accelerate the growth of mold.
Oiling the Leather
You will need to oil your leather saddle regularly using a light oil, such as neatsfoot oil. It is a good idea to do this outside as it can be very messy! The saddle can be placed on a saddle stand or a chair. If you use a chair cover it with old towels or sheets and place a weight on the seat so that it doesn’t tip over. Using a paint brush or soft cloth apply the oil to the saddle generously. A paint brush is easier than a cloth as you can apply oil to all the parts more easily. If your saddle is new or hasn’t been oiled for a long time you might need to apply more than one coat.
Cleaning a Leather Saddle
To remove dust and dirt from the saddle it can be cleaned with glycerine or oil soap, rinsed thoroughly and allowed to dry naturally. Do not place it near a heater as this will cause the leather to dry out too much and crack. After cleaning lightly coat with oil. Make a point of wiping over your saddle and tack with a damp spone and gycerine soap after every ride to keep it in good condition. To remove bits of ground in dirt, especially in crevices, an old toothrush works well.
Inspect Your Saddle Regularly
Make a point of checking the saddle for wear on a regular basis. Look underneath to make sure the lining is intact. Damaged linings can result in irritation to your horse and can result in injury or soreness.
Clean Your Tack
It is also importanty to clean the tack regularly. Leather parts should be cleaned iun the same way as your leather saddle. Metal parts can be placed into a bucket of warm water and scrubbed. Don’t use soap on the bit or your horse is sure to object! Instead use a dilute solution of Listerine to clean and disinfect the bit then rinse carefully.
